Before we get into a preview of the game itself, let me first explain the two potential records to which I am referring. First of all, with a win tonight Bobby Cremins will join a select group of just 11 other coaches who have recorded 100 or more wins with three different schools. In Bobby's case it would be Appalachian State, Georgia Tech and now the College.
What I think would be an even more phenomenal accomplishment is if Drew Goudelock can reach 18 points tonight and surpass Ken Gustafson as the College of Charleston's all-time career scoring leader. Like all teams WCU will do their best to limit Goudelock's performance, but if he can get within 5 points of his average the record will be all his. Andrew Goudelock has already established himself as CofC's greatest shooting guard ever. With 11 games to go, Drew's scoring output would put him in the argument for the school's single greatest player. I know WCU won't bring a strong crowd, but I'd like to see Andrew get some recognition for this accomplishment when it happens.
Now on to the game itself.
Following the loss in Chattanooga, the College is going to be looking to rebound (literally and figuratively) against a Western Carolina team that is in the midst of a four game Socon win streak. WCU is a pretty solid conference team. They're not the best, not the worst. They don't score many points, but don't generally allow their opponents to do so either. They rebound about as well as the Cougars do and have a huge bench.
For the Cougars to win this one, there will need to be a few things that happen. First off the Cougars need to learn from their mistakes in Chatty and pick up the defense if the Catamounts want to run. Like their North Division counterparts, WCU's bench players can come in to keep the tempo up. Secondly, we need to not let off the gas pedal. It's become sort of a theme when the Cougs play at home. The team comes out on fire, the crowd's on their feet and we go up 10 or 15 points early. Then the crowd settles, players get slack and the opponent can get themselves back into it. Sooner or later an opponent is going to be able to take advantage of our team slouching and fight ahead. Last but not least, the Cougars need to play sound and fundamental basketball. We're more than halfway through the season and have a tough stretch ahead of us next week (at Davidson, then Woffy and Furple at home). The team needs to tighten up their game and be playing their best for the rest of the year.
PS- Chattanooga plays at Wofford tonight. Big opportunity for the Mocs to have a letdown game. I hope they get their butts kicked.
