I'll be honest I really don't like the Citadel. There's always just been something about our crosstown rivals that has rubbed me the wrong way ever since I was a freshman. The creeping outside of Berry dorm, the homoerotic hazing rituals, and the general douchebagery of cadets in most social settings have all contributed to this sentiment.
Would I have all these stigmas about Citadel cadets if they weren't our rivals? Maybe not. But then again they view most CofC fans as a bunch of hipsters getting high while reading Plato and listening to the Garden State soundtrack. This is the beauty of a rivalry.
But anyways, onto the basketball game itself. It may surprise some of y'all but we have actually not beaten Citadel on our new home court yet. The last two years Citadel has shown up and put forth their best effort against us. It's time to finally stop this ugly trend.
New Coach Chuck Driesell has so far been unsuccessful implementing his fast paced tempo on an experienced Citadel team that had much success with a half court offense the last few years. The team doesn't have much of an identity and has struggled to keep pace in the Socon. Hopefully their struggles will be our gain, as this is the perfect opportunity to finally lay a good ole fashioned butt whooping on the Bulldogs.
CofC may be an 18 point favorite according to Vegas, but don't expect a blowout just yet. Citadel showed some fight against UTC before losing by just one point on Thursday. Trust that they'll bring their A game against the Cougars and fight tooth and nail to keep their CFA "win streak" alive for another game.
I would love to see the senior players show more aggression against the Bulldogs this year and not make the mistake of underestimating them once again. Hopefully we'll have a big second half lead and the freshman can finally get some decent playing time. Go Cougs!
