Bracketbuster Saturday: CofC at Kent State

Kent State (19-6, 9-3 MAC)
College of Charleston (16-11, 8-8)
Memorial A&C Center
Tipoff at 6pm on ESPN 910 and via live stream at

The Cougars get a quick break from Socon play to travel up to Ohio to take on our third straight Bracketbuster opponent in Kent State. Don't know much about the Golden Flashes so I'll break it down as follows:

Are they good in general?
Kent State opened the season by defeating West Virginia in Morgantown and have kept pace near the top of a MAC conference that includes teams like Ohio University, Akron and Buffalo. Against other teams the Cougars have played this year, the Golden Flashes similarly crushed Morehead State and defeated Western Carolina by 2.

What happened the last time these two teams met?
This game will be a rematch of a 2003 first round NIT game between the two programs. CofC won that game on Kent State's floor, 71-66.

Do they do anything particularly well?
They win at home, which doesn't bode well for us. They are 11-1 at the MAC Center this year with their lone loss coming to another familiar CofC opponent: Cleveland State. The Golden Flashes also start four seniors and a junior. They are very experienced and don't have many mental lapses.

Who do the Cougars need to watch out for?
Justin Greene will probably give us trouble. He's a 6-8 senior forward who leads the team in points and rebounds and can make you pay from the free throw line.

Is their mascot cool?
Not exactly sure what a Golden Flash is, but a scowling eagle seems to be about the best one can do.

Go Cougars!
