While we all discuss the merits of the CAA versus the SoCon, Coach Wojcik has added another recruit to next years incoming freshman class: point guard Joe Chealey from Apopka High School outside Orlando. Chealey's verbal commitment was first reported by Jeff Goodman at CBS Sports and CofC beat writer Andrew Miller had a story about Joe in today's P&C.
Chealey has great size at just over 6'2 for a point guard at the mid-major level and, as you can see from the video above, he utilizes his crossover and his length to get to the rim. Normally with speedy young point guards you worry about their jump shooting. From what I've seen of Joe (especially on his own YouTube profile) it doesn't appear as if his shot his broken and he does have a runner in the lane that seems to work just fine. Word from Apopka's head coach is that Chealey is also a tenacious on-ball defender and a superb playmaker.
Not only that, but Coach Ruta also explained that Joe is a late bloomer of sorts and still has a lot of room to grow. That appears to be confirmed by this article taken from a UConn basketball blog. The author writes that Joseph Chealey is "a name to remember" and also notes that schools such as UConn, George Mason, Kansas and VCU were beginning to show interest as the junior point guard continued to improve.
The best part of this signing however is that Joe is committed to academics (he carries a 3.9 GPA) and word is he has already bonded with the rest of the team. He joins Terrance O'Donohue as the Cougars' 2013 recruiting class.
